Something's a little off

Something's been a little bit off in my workouts lately. Monday's run felt really hard to push through. Yesterday I felt like I was sinking rather than swimming in the pool, and this morning's run wasn't much better than Monday's (except I didn't get shin splints or anything like that.)

But I've just been feeling so run down and blah when I've been working out and I'm not sure what the deal is. I've been trying to get to bed early so that I can get enough sleep. Usually I'm in bed between 11 and midnight (which for most college kids is insanely early) and I try to wake up to get my runs in at 6:30. That's a pretty solid night of sleep.

I think I can pretty much rule out not getting enough sleep, because yes I wake up a little sleepy in the morning, but I'm usually wide awake by the time I get to the bathroom to brush my teeth. So I really don't think that's the problem.

Which leads me to wonder if it's more what I'm eating. I mean obviously some foods are better than others at powering me through a workout. And as more and more end of the semester work piles up, I tend to eat crappier and crappier foods, which could possibly result in the less than stellar workouts that I've been dealing with.

I think my mini-training goal for the next week is going to be to really pay attention to what I'm eating and see if changing up a few things makes a difference in my workouts. It's really frustrating getting up to go out and run and then my body just being like No Jess this isn't happening right now.

If anyone has any fun, delicious, easy to do food ideas that you use I'd love to hear about it. And I'll be sure to keep you all posted on if the dietary changes make any difference in my performance!

  1. I will agree with the crappier foods affecting the workouts! I hear ya sista!

With the end of my semester coming, and moving out of my apartment this weekend/week, I haven't eaten the best..pizza, fast food, etc. Plus all the energy spent packing and physically moving things, I haven't had the time or energy to run! Crazy!

Before we know it, we will have so much time on our hands we won't know how to use it!

  2. Maybe you just need a couple of days off to refocus, rest, heal and, most importantly, regain the hunger to train. Or perhaps you are subconsciously bored of your workouts. Maybe you should switch to something different for a couple of days. Some suggestions: tennis, soccer, elliptical trainer, rowing, dancing, basketball, hiking.

  4. I always look to those same things when I have a poopy workout. I usually find that I haven't hydrated well or like you said haven't eaten well. When I come up with yummy healthy things to eat in the next few weeks I will be sure to post them.

I would seriously be a zombie on that much sleep but I do remember that in college you can get by on less just out of necessity.

  5. Do you eat breakfast at all? I don't know how much of a solution that could be...but I always eat a bowl of Raisin Bran Crunch with blueberries in it, and that gives me a bunch of energy. Of course you probably don't wanna eat that right before your morning run. I'm also a fan of a bagel with honey - it's quick and easy.

I've been lacking on the fruits lately, but a simple apple or pear could hold you over for a couple hours at least. Ok I'm out of ideas!
