First solid run in a while

by - Wednesday, April 02, 2008

I feel like this morning's run was the first solid one I've had in a while. Things felt pretty good and I was able to push the speed on the treadmill to 6.5.

I did my usual warm up and then started pushing the speed by .5 every five minutes. I topped off at 6.5 from minutes 15-20 and then brought it down to 6.0 til 25 minutes and then dropped it to 5.5 to 30 minutes.

I kicked it back up to 6.0 from 30-35 and finished off the last five minutes at 5.5.

The only thing that bothered me was my left heel a little bit in the beginning. It faded after about 5 minutes or so, but I'm wondering if this might be an early warning sign that it's time to get new shoes.

My biggest fear with the upcoming race is that my shoes will bonk out the day of the race and that would probably be the worst thing in the entire world.

So what do you guys think. Time to go cash in for a new pair of Mizunos?

  1. I don't think your shoes are gonna bonk out on ya. Do you track your mileage? I got like 380 on my Mizunos and they are going strong :-) Maybe the bursa in your heel was a bit irritated. I'm a bursa expert now ;-)

    Great job on the run!

I just bought some new mizunos and LOVE them. But the cost makes it a tough call.

    Glad you're feeling better!

  3. If you do decide to get new shoes, I'd recommend getting the exact same size and model that you're running in now, insofar as that is possible. You don't want to try anything new this close to race day (it is close to race day, right?)... take it from the guy who got new insoles the day of his first half marathon and ended up with blisters the size of Sacajawea Dollars.

If you have time, I'd recommend getting at least one long (read: pre-taper) run in the new shoes before the race, just in case.

    Good luck!

  4. That is a good question. If you got a new pair now there would be time to break them in but like Wes said you could probably stretch this pair if you wanted. I am big help, huh?

  5. I always recommend buying new kicks LMAO! I also agree with Lisa, if you ge them now then they'll be broken in by the time the race comes. Plus it's not like you aren't going to need them, KWIM? LOL

  6. How many miles are on the shoes? They don't go "bonk" overnight so you should be able to determine when they need to be replaced before the race.

  7. Oooh. listen to your body! You might need new shoes! I am feeling the same way about my brooks. but, I am hoping I can get in another 60-80 miles before the half marathon and then switch to a new pair!

  8. I always keep shoes too long...the shoe guy yells at me every time..I only mention that to say that I run a lot less than you do so it might be time!

Pay attention to that heel pain. Could be a sign of plantar fasciitis. Hopefully it's just the need for new shoes, though. Take care and run strong!
