Cooking up a storm

by - Tuesday, October 06, 2009

Since I had yesterday off from work, I decided to do a little planning in advance as far as food goes for the rest of the week. I cooked for like three hours.

My normal schedule looks something like this:
6:15 a.m. Alarm
6:30 a.m. Get on Metro (I do alllll getting ready work the night before)
7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work
5:30 p.m. Metro home from work (Yes it takes almost double the time getting home as coming into the office, don't ask me why)
6 p.m. Workout
7 p.m. Shower
7:30 p.m. Dry Hair
8 p.m. Think about dinner

As you can see, my normal dinner time is like 8 p.m., a time of night when I'm not in the mood to cook or anything. So I eat cereal, PBJ or frozen dinners. Sad but true.

But then I was reading my most recent issue of Self magazine and they had an awesome article with recipes that you could cook on one day and eat for the rest of the week. I gave it a whirl yesterday, making all five of the recipes.

They were a pasta dish, an enchilada dish, Thai soup, and two other things I can't remember right now.

Then you freeze them until you want to eat them and go from there! It took me a few hours to make everything, but I think now I will have dinners for the rest of the month.

Plus it was a productive way to spend my day off.

I kind of like the idea of cooking once and not having to worry about it during the week when I'm busy trying to cram other stuff in.

Do any of you all do the cook once a week thing?

  1. Once a week I try to make something that can be in the fridge for kids or whatever to grab and go, but otherwise I cook every day (which also takes discipline...have to plan in advance so we have what we need when we need it)

  2. no, but I would like to get Dee Dee to try it. We are so busy, and I or she always cooks, but easy and healthy is better!

  3. I looooove to cook on sunday then have food to easily grab for the week. It's my favorite thing and now it's a bit of a ritual so it's relaxing

  4. Since I'm cooking for one, it's really hard to make something new every day. I usually make 1-2 meals and then eat them all week! Otherwise I'll have something simple like pizza bagels or mac and cheese with some veggies thrown in. Definitely the way to go to cook in mass quantities!

  6. I don't do my cooking all at once, but I do my planning and grocery shopping all at once. It makes me feel all Suzie Homemaker to cook in the evening, but I most certainly don't have time to go to the store more than once a week.

  7. when I have a kitchen again this is really something I ought to do... I am terrible about being too lazy at night to figure out and actually cook dinner.

ps I love that you are up and out the door in 15 minutes! I am too slow in my half-awake state. I need my 30 mins :)
