Books I Read in April

by - Friday, May 03, 2013

I seriously don't know where the month of April went. March seemed to drag on and on forever and then I feel like I blinked and April was gone.

Despite April flying by so fast, I managed to read a few good books (and by good I mean entertaining, not literary masterpieces) and try a new author that my friend recommended.

Might have gone juuuust a bit overboard at the library today

Here's what I read:

Law of Attraction by Allison Leotta
My friend Emily recommended Allison Leotta to me because she knows I'm a huge Linda Fairstein fan, and Leotta's books have been compared to Fairstein's. Plus Leotta's books are all set in DC. Leotta is a lawyer turned author and this was her first book, and I will say I didn't totally love it. The book was more chick lit with some crime drama thrown in, and I thought that plot was a bit weak, but since Leotta's books feature the same characters I wanted to start here so I could get the back story.

Discretion by Allison Leotta
Leotta's second book was much better than the first. The chick lit drama was mostly dropped in favor of a harder hitting murder/suspense plot. This book starts with a girl being thrown from a balcony at the U.S. Capitol and twists and turns through the world of high-powered politicians, elections and the darker side of DC's escort services. I didn't see right through this plot and I actually enjoyed the story here.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks
Emily and I went to see this movie a while back, and I was curious to see how it compared to the book, so I snagged the book from the library. It's been ages since I've actually read a Nicholas Sparks book, but man can he tell a story. No wonder so many of his books get turned into movies. The movie actually sums up the plot pretty well so here ya go:

The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks
Yes somehow I ended up going down the rabbit hole of Nicholas Sparks books this month. I never actually saw the movie for this one, but Emily said the book was good so I figured why not. (Also, I think every book I read this month Emily recommended to me...random observation.) The book was good, but really sad. Emily warmed me she cried her way through the last several chapters, and after reading it, I totally can see why. Here's the trailer which sums it up well. Apparently the movie starred Miley Cyrus...

  1. Even better, the last song was filmed on Tybee Island in Georgia, and my parents saw Miley & Billie Ray hanging out in the local restaurants down there a few times. The movie sucked, but that is a cool connection. And I still really want to see Safe Haven the movie as well. What can I say, I'm a dude and a sucker for Nicholas Sparks movies.
