4 miles at 4:30

Happy Hump Day friends! We're half way to the weekend (or well for me, I'm one day away from the weekend since I'm off on Friday because I'm in my friend's wedding on Saturday.)

Summer in DC is definitely starting to heat up so to stick with my "non-training training plan," I've decided it's time to shift my runs to the early morning.

My alarm went off at 4:20 this morning, and I was up well before the sun to get in my four miles.

4 miles at 4:30 in the lovely DC humidity

I had forgotten how quiet DC can be in those early morning hours. I walked out of my house and didn't hear the normal hustle and bustle. There wasn't the rush of traffic or blaring horns.

It was really peaceful.

In fact, it was so peaceful that even my friends, the deer, were out this morning.

No matter how long I live in DC, I still can't get used to seeing deer walking in yards along a really busy street.

Yea this is happening on my run right now. Go away stupid deer
Deer I saw on a run through the park last summer in DC

Seeing deer on a run in the countryside of PA, totally natural. Seeing them running through urban DC, not so much.

I finished my 4 miles in just under a 10-minute per mile average. The humidity was definitely noticeable, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it will most likely be later this summer. Guess it's time to get used to seeing those slower running times for the next few months.

Do you switch your running schedule based on the weather? I'm normally a morning runner in the summer and an evening runner in the winter.

  1. I need to get serious about morning running. Tried to run after work yesterday and it was 100 deg. Only went 3 miles, but I was seriously concerned about passing out

  2. I've taken to running in the mornings in D.C. now too because of the heat. I hit up the Mall and even though I've lived in the area my whole life, I'm still not used to seeing the Mall so empty.

P.S., as a fellow UMD j-school grad (2005), go Terps!

  3. You won me over at 4:20. I don't use an alarm but am starting to rethink that so I can get in some running time now that it's hot out. Afternoons and evenings just aren't working.

Wonderful that you were able to get that close and get the picture of the deer. This is one of the reasons that I've finally started to enjoy running outdoors.

  4. Hi Jess! It's always cool to see wildlife on a run:-). As long as you're not too tired to run away if they're a predator! When I saw the title of this post, I though you were running four miles in 4 minutes and 30 seconds, or that you were running at an average of 4:30 per mile for four miles. That would be amazing!

  5. Hi Jess. Nothing beats a morning run! It sets you up for the day and is more invigorating than a cold shower. Would love to see deer in the morning but here in London, Uk all you see is red buses. Still, the morning run is my favorite time of the day.
