Fixing My Broken Hips

by - Thursday, February 11, 2016

So after a solid three months of my left hip being annoyingly tight, stiff and at times downright painful, I finally decided to do something more than stretching/yoga.

You'd think maybe I would have done something before now, but what can I say, I'm stubborn. Plus I was sort of hoping since I wasn't running as much because of school, that maybe the extra time off would help it just magically fix itself.

Turns out magic fixes don't actually exist.

So last week, I called up my massage therapist and basically begged her to find time to fit me in the next day. I was lucky and she was able to squeeze me in to an early Friday evening appointment.

After the last few weeks of all the stress, this was just what the doctor ordered

When I told her what the deal was, she asked me a couple questions, and then was like, "You know, a lot of hip stuff starts in the glutes...is that OK?"

It took me a second to realize she was basically asking me if I was cool with her touching my butt. At that point, I just wanted to issue to be fixed so badly, that I was like yea, you do what you need to do.

She took that to mean digging her elbow into my glutes and IT bands for a solid 10 minutes each. Holy Moses, I wanted to cry.

But when I left, my hip was finally loose. When I walked, it didn't feel like the muscles were "catching" anymore. (Not really sure how else to describe what I had been feeling).

But then I ran those seven miles on Sunday, and everything went to hell again.

So I realized, it's time to officially get back into a regular foam rolling routine.

So old friend, we meet again

Because really there's nothing like a little bit of self-torture to fix running issues.

I foam rolled for a while tonight, and I have to admit even though it hurt like crazy, it helped. My hip again feels looser and less like it's catching. So I guess my new routine is going to be about 15 minutes of foam rolling a day to see if I can get this hip nonsense cleared up for good.

Hopefully it will start hurting less soon or my neighbors are going to start wondering what weird stuff is going down in my apartment.

  1. Argh! Hip issues!! I know how you feel! I had hip surgery last year to repair a torn labrum and my hips still act up from time to time. What works for me is tons of stretching and ice after my workouts. The foam roller is brutal but necessary. I hope you feel better soon!

Ok, now we are just the tiniest bit scared. You might have guessed we are slipping into our parental voice. LOL. Rest, treatment, foam rolling, or any combination thereof, of course you know what to do to feel better! Like everyone who knows you we only wish the best for you! So glad that the foam rolling is helping!!! :)
