I'm the Most Impatient PT Patient

by - Wednesday, May 10, 2017

I'm pretty sure my physical therapist thinks I'm the most impatient person in the world. I had my third PT appointment on Monday, and when he asked how things were going, I rattled off all the problems I was still having with my hip.

PT office and ice pack

Now let's remember, my third PT appointment was less than a week after my first one.

After listening to my spastic rambling of everything I thought was wrong, PT Dan took me through some stretches. Then he measured the progress we were making on my hip flexibility. Turns out, there was some decent improvement there -- even though it had been less than a week.

He explained that he still expected me to be decently sore for the remainder of this week. But by the end of next week, I should start to see noticeable improvements.

The best part of physical therapy...when they cover you in electric shocker things and massive ice packs.

If we're being honest, I actually think I'm starting to see small improvements today. This morning was the first time in I can't even remember how long that my walk to work did not hurt my hip. This seems like a pretty big win right now.

So while I still have at least one more week of no running, I think Dan was right. I am slowly making progress.

I hate missing the chance to run in some of the gorgeous spring weather we've been having this week. But if it means I will be healed for Chicago Marathon training next month, I'm going to try to be OK with that.

In the meantime, I've been doing a bunch of yoga. I figure that's good for all around flexibility, and it's at least some level of movement. I'm looking forward to being able to run again -- though I'm super nervous about the start of marathon training. I'll ramble about that more in another post.

For now, PT seems to be going well. I'm going to be try to be more patient and hopefully I'll be good to go in a few weeks.

  1. I can totally relate the struggle to be patient with therapy! What's ironic is that I'm a therapist myself, and yet often have a hard time taking my own advice. While I know that recovery takes time, I always want to get back to running as soon as possible. I do know that the rest and recovery is always worth it though as far s injury is concerned.

  2. Small improvements are still improvements! It's better to take a couple weeks off now than have to miss the marathon later. Keep up with those exercises and stretches - they really help!
