Stupid Knee Take Two

by - Thursday, May 29, 2008

Bahhhh my knee is no better. I don't think it's any worse, but it's definitely not better. So I'm not running again today. Please kill me now. (Ok not really, I'm just frustrated as all hell.) To those of you who asked, I don't think it's my shoes. I just bought new ones last month.

New plan: Rest today, rest tomorrow (which is a rest day anyway), try to run sometime this weekend, nothing strenuous just something short and easy.

----------

Ok on to other really cool info:

I want this:

But it costs this: $599.99

It's the cheapest road bike I could find at any local bike shop. It's pretty and I like it and I want it because I can't tri without a bike. And I've been thinking about it and thinking about it and thinking about it and I think really want to try a tri. (LOL)

So I made a little deal with myself. Because I obviously don't have the money to spend on it right now, I decided that I would buy it for myself as my reward for finally losing my college weight. (The freshman 15 stuck around after the first year and then was joined by five of its friends so that means I've got about 20 pounds I'd like to get rid of.)

I don't think I'm going to do a specific diet or anything. I'm just going to pay closer attention to what I eat and try to make sure I'm eating healthy stuff.

We'll see how it goes. I really want that bike (or a bike, that one's on sale and has been discontinued so I may have to settle for a different model).

What kind of pointers do all you experience triathletes have about picking out a bike? I'll take any advice/help you can provide.

  1. Purty :-) The most important thing is to get a bike your size, then you need to get fitted. Otherwise, it will cause all kinds of problems with your ITB and knee! So, not only will you need a bike, but pedals, and possible bike shoes if you go clipless, a helmet, air pump, sun glasses (have to look cool), and a proper fitting! Keep that in mind.

I'm 6 foot and my bike is 53 cm. Dee Dee is 5'2", and her bike is 46 cm. The bike shop should be able to help you with this...

Even if you don't decide to tri or you don't like it, having a bike for cross training and group rides is just fun stuff :-)

  2. I totally agree with Wes about the fit. I had actually picked out the Trek 1000 for my first bike but got in the shop and it didn't fit me well at all. I tried out a comparable bike it fit great (specialized dolce). So fit is key. And to add what Wes said I am 5'4 and my bike is 51 cm.

Also, if you get on some of the triathlon websites people are selling road bikes quite a bit when they upgrade to tri bikes. Also check Craiglist and ebay but only after you have been fit and know what size.

Gooooooood luck and have fun bike shopping!! :>D

Oh and if you don't know what we mean by fit you will when you are on the bike. I didn't have a clue until I actually got on a bike and felt the differences. For me it had to do with how I felt when I leaned forward to the handlebars as the Trek bars were a really far lean for me. Some of that stuff can be adjusted and swapped out later but you want to get as close of a fit from the beginning.

  5. Just work with a qualified professional bike store to get the right fit. That's most important (as far as I know).

  6. Pick one that fits well.

Expect to spend more than you expected to spend (by the time you get cycling gear, possibly a new seat, shoes/pedals, etc)
