Food Poisoning is a B

by - Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Yes friends, food poisoning is a biatch. And food poisoning two weeks before MCM is seriously the worst. I woke up at 2:30 a.m. with my stomach practically turning inside out and spent much of the night being violently ill.

This part's a little nasty so if you're squeamish skip this line: Did you know it was possible to puke so violently that pieces of food lodge themselves in your sinuses and when you blow your nose they come out then? Because I certainly didn't until last night.

I think the culprit is the leftover chicken tortilla soup I ate for dinner last night. I think it may have been sitting in my fridge a few days too long and the chicken went bad. Otherwise, I have no clue what caused this.

But it's safe to say it's the most miserable feeling in the world. I'm sipping Gatorade to help with the massive dehydration and I'm really, reallllly hoping this goes away soon.

Oh no!!! I had it once and it was AWFUL... I didn't know this but it's often something you actually ate 24-28 hours in advance. Kenny and I had both gotten chicken at a Thai restaurant for dinner on a Thursday night and then in the wee hours the following Saturday AM, we both woke up violently ill. We reported it to health dept. and they investigated and found out that the restaurant's fridge temp wasn't cold enough! UGH it's the pits. Hope you feel better soon!!!

  2. I've had food poisoning a few times...and yes, I knew that about the sinuses. Stomach illness is the worst! But, at least it's now and not the night before the race! Feel Better!

  3. It's really tough to distinguish between food poisoning and other GI viruses, like norovirus. All the symptoms are the same, so are timing and duration. Either way, rest, drink plenty of fluids, and I can't tell you how useful Immodium is: It helps relieve some symptoms, but it also makes you drowsy, and that sleep is mostly what you need. Feel better soon!

  4. I have actually puked that hard, but it was from a hangover. Kelley's actually the best, she was so hungover one morning she was puking so hard that she pissed herself uncontrollably, and popped out a 'roid at the same time. Then we had to spend 13 hours riding on a train from NJ to NC before she could get any hemmy relief. And she just loves it when I tell that story.

Get some gatorade! The worst part of all that barf is the resulting dehydration. You'll get over the food poisoning soon enough, but being dehydrated can affect your race day performance. Drink up!

I hope it is just a one day thing!!!

Even if it is over in a day be careful when you start running again. You will be exhausted and dehydrated, so do not push it and listen to your body. You do not want to dig yourself a hole before MCM.
